Addiction, whether that is a drug addiction or an alcohol addiction, is a terrible thing. It is a destructive cycle, and once you are trapped within it, it can be extremely difficult to break out.
Drug and Alcohol Rehab Hertford
Substance abuse carries with it many dangers, both to your physical and psychological health, and the risk of falling victim to these consequences increases with every day that you remain addicted.
Debilitating, chronic conditions like liver disease, lung disease and multiple forms of cancer can all be caused or exacerbated by the sustained misuse of drugs and alcohol.
Substance misuse can also trigger acute medical emergencies such as strokes and heart attacks, meaning that the danger is not always slow and gradual but often sudden and deadly too.
The more you use or drink, the more entrenched your dependency becomes, and the greater quantities you must consume to satisfy your increasing cravings.
This is why it is so important that sufferers of addiction address and tackle the issue as soon as they possibly can. The best way to do that, without a doubt, is by undergoing professional rehabilitation.
What exactly does Rehabilitation mean?
If you are struggling with an addiction to alcohol or drugs, you may already have considered going to drug and alcohol rehab. It can be an intimidating prospect, and lots of people have misconceptions about what it is like.
The first thing to say is that, when faced with substance dependency, there are only really two routes you can follow to recovery. The first is to attempt to overcome the addiction by yourself. Some people do manage to do this, and that is commendable, but for most sufferers the reality of the situation is that this is an impossible task.
When addicts attempt to recover alone, the usual method is “going cold turkey”. This means suddenly and completely cutting out drugs and alcohol, and weathering the withdrawal period until the cravings subside. This is an incredibly dangerous way to go about things. Withdrawal symptoms can be serious, potentially even life threatening.
They can range from mild pains and aches to severe seizures and hallucinations, and the process can wreak untold havoc on your mental state.
The majority of users who go cold turkey end up giving in to the cravings, and when they return to use they almost always end up increasing the dose to compensate for the lost time- making the problem, ultimately, much worse. It also needs to be said that, even if you manage to get through the withdrawal period alone, the cravings will never wholly go away.
The compulsion to return to use will always be there to some extent, niggling away at the back of your mind, and if you do not have the discipline or training to ignore and overcome that compulsion, the danger of relapse will always be high.
The second option, professional alcohol and drug rehab, is infinitely safer and it vastly increases the likelihood of success. Put in the simplest way, rehab offers you a safe environment in which to undergo the withdrawal phase (reducing the risk of permanent damage to your physical and psychological health) and then equips you with the self understanding to remain sober going forwards.
The idea of rehab might seem frightening, but all it really is is a safe space and a helping hand.
The first step- Detoxification
The first step in your rehabilitation journey will be detoxification, or detox as it is better known. The detoxification clinic is probably what puts most people off from attending rehab, as the idea of being forced to go through the uncomfortable and painful process of withdrawal is understandably an intimidating idea.
It is important to remember, though, that if you want to get better you will have to push through withdrawal at some point, and it is much safer to do so with constant, high quality medical care than without it.
In a proper, dedicated detox clinic much of the potential danger will be removed, and help will be immediately on hand should there be any sort of emergency. We cannot promise that you will be comfortable, but you will be as comfortable as it is possible to make you.
And, it may be surprising to hear, but you will not actually be forced or rushed through the process. Different people recover at different rates, and each patient will have varying needs and so different approaches will be taken to their treatment.
For example, if you are suffering from an opioid addiction, replacement drugs such as methadone can be provided to help you through the difficult weaning process. This is the type of treatment that simply cannot be replicated outside of a professional clinic.

Aftercare – Therapies and Holistic Treatment
While integral to the recovery process, detox is only the first thing that rehab has to offer. As mentioned above, one of the drawbacks of attempting recovery alone is that the chances are high that you will eventually relapse.
The ultimate goal of rehab is relapse prevention, and that is why treatment centres take a comprehensive, holistic approach to addiction treatment.
Once all of the toxins have been flushed out of your system, you will have the opportunity to undertake a number of different therapies all aimed at providing you with the tools to prevent yourself from falling back into the same traps once you leave the clinic.
The exact programme of care can vary greatly from patient to patient, but common methods of treatment include talking therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy, therapeutic therapies like art therapy, and counselling both one-on-one and as part of a group.
The support offered by these therapies will help you to develop your own healthy coping mechanisms, and to understand the root causes and triggers of your substance misuse.
Once you properly understand why and how you fell into addiction, and how to avoid these same pitfalls moving forwards, you can safely and permanently return to a sober and healthy life.
