Can You Recover From Addiction Without Rehab?

Despite how far society has come in regards to its view on addiction and drug and alcohol rehabilitation services, some people still may prefer to not have to go to rehab in order to deal with their addiction.

First of all, in order to know if you can recover from your addiction without rehab, you must know what kind of addiction you have. There are two main types of addictions. First, you have a chemical addiction.

A chemical addiction comes from drugs such as heroin and alcohol, which causes a chemical change in your body from long-term use. With chemical addictions, your body grows used to having the drugs or alcohol in your system. This means that if you were to just try to quit cold turkey, you would experience withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawal symptoms can be very dangerous and can include:

  • Headache
  • Nusa
  • Vomiting
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Hot flashes
  • Chills
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Delirium
  • Haluniations

And most dangerous of all, you could experience a withdrawal, including a seizure.

Due to the high risk of withdrawal symptoms, it is not recommended that you ever attempt to deal with a chemical addiction alone. At the very least, you will need to undertake a drug or alcohol detox in a medical facility in order to be able to work through the mental effects of your addiction safely.

The other main type of addiction is mental addiction. This is often caused by an addiction to drugs such as cannabis which have an effect on your mental state but do not cause your body to become chemically reliant.

Suppose the drug you are addicted to is just a mental addiction, then, in theory. In that case, you can recover from your addiction without the help of a drug rehab centre all on your own.

However, this will likely be very difficult as you will be lacking support and the therapy that you will be needing to help tackle the mental health impact of prolonged drug addiction.

If you would prefer to remain out of a drug and alcohol rehab centre, you do have the option of finding a support group to help you on your journey. Groups such as alcoholics anonymous and narcotics anonymous are very good options, and you will have one available to you in the Frome area.

How Long Does Rehab Last?

The exact amount of time you will spend in rehab in the Frome area depends on your specific needs. Some people require more care than others.

But a standard amount of time is 28-30 days in a residential drug and alcohol rehab centre.

This time will cover all your treatments and therapy sessions while also keeping you away from temptation long enough so that hopefully, once you leave the rehab centre, you will be able to avoid a relapse.

You do also have the option of just booking into a rehab centre for a detox. A detox again depends on how long exactly it takes to wean your individual body off drugs and alcohol. Still, as a standard, it tends to take around ten days to complete.

Most rehabs also offer aftercare services in the form of relapse prevention plans and follow-up therapy sessions. These are often done as an outpatient and can carry on for years after you have completed your rehab treatments as a way to keep your mind healthy and to check up on your progress.

Treatments Available

There are a number of treatments available within a drug and alcohol rehab centre.

The first one that is fairly standard to begin your treatments is the detox process.

The detox process is very simply the process of weaning your body off all drugs and alcohol through a controlled experience. During this, you will experience some withdrawal symptoms, but don’t worry. You will be monitored 24 hours by a team of fully qualified medical professionals who will make sure the withdrawal symptoms don’t become too much for your body to handle.

They are able to administer medication that relieves the symptoms should they prove too much for you, so you are perfectly safe throughout.

Another standard treatment you will work through is therapy.

As the leading cause of addiction is mental health issues and undiagnosed mental illness, therapy is needed in order to help you get to the root cause behind your addiction.

There are different types of therapy available designed to help different people in different ways.

For example, say you are struggling to communicate, you may be recommended for holistic therapy, also known as art therapy. This will help you express yourself to your therapist and also give you a mindful task to help focus your mind on after you leave the rehab centre.

In some cases, you may be prescribed a substitute drug in order to help you overcome your addiction. For example, suppose you are addicted to heroin or any other kind of opioid. In that case, you may be prescribed methadone to help ease your transition to sobriety.

Is Private Rehab the Right Option For Me?

Private rehab in the Frome area can be very good as it can offer you a personalised and one-to-one experience that often can’t be found as part of the NHS.

It also allows you to skip the long waiting lists, which are unfortunately standard parts of the mental health sector these days and get to the help you need as quickly as possible.

Some people can be put off by the price, but there are cheaper options available within the private sector, such as sharing a room during your stay.

Private rehab services are a very good option to have as the staff are all fully qualified and not stretched thin, so they can really prioritise you and your needs.

However, it is important to remember if you don’t think that a private rehab is an option for you that, the NHS does provide rehab services that offer the same kind of treatments and professionalism. However, you just might have to wait a little while to access them.
