Overcoming Addiction
Every single addiction is different and each requires a unique set of treatments. Unfortunately, it is always different and depends on the person. Each individual case of addiction is completely different. There different reasons as to why someone may suffer from addiction, how they got there, how often they use, how much they use, what they use and why.
All of these things need to be taken into account when treating addiction that is why rehab is the perfect place to recover. Everything is taken into account and each individual point is treated.
It can be quite unnerving when overcoming addiction. The thought of recovery often worries people, the important thing to remember is that the outcome is so much better than the here and now. That second chance at life that recovery offers you is so worth it. To lead a happier, healthier life is worth it.
It is, however, important to remember that recovery is useless if you don’t fully want it. Addiction can trick your brain into thinking it needs drugs or alcohol to live and that can lead to you not really wanting to recover deep down.
If you don’t fully commit and are not willing to do everything it takes to recover, it will not work and you are likely to relapse. It is important to surrender your addiction.
What is detoxing?
Detoxing is the process in which you rid the toxins such as drugs and alcohol from your body. This can take from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the severity of your addiction. Never try this at home alone as it can be extremely dangerous.
In rehab, you will be fully monitored 24/7 and even given medications to make you more comfortable and prevent any serious side effects.
Some of the side effects of withdrawals are:
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Heart palpitations
- Vomiting
- Paranoia
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Shaking
- High blood pressure
- Irregular heart rate
- Seizure
- Hallucinations
- Heart failure
While in rehab detox, you will be safe and will be ready to start the next stages of your recovery. This is one of the hardest parts but the most rewarding as you will feel great afterwards. You will likely be put on a diet of certain foods for nutrition to help you rebuild your strength.
Therapy in Rehab
Often along with medication, therapy is one of the most valuable sources of treatment to addiction you could ask for and in rehab, it will take up a lot of the time on your treatment programme. There are all kinds of therapies that you will take part in, some you may not even think of as therapy.
The main therapy you will attend will be the one to one talk therapy with a psychologist. This therapy will be your go-to for everything. You will work out how and why you are where you are now and you will learn all about your addiction and yourself.
This is where some people receive a dual diagnosis of a mental health condition along with their addiction. Bu this isn’t the case for everyone. Sometimes you may have loved ones attend some sessions to work on rebuilding and reconnecting your relationships.
There are group therapies you will attend that can be very rewarding. People often find they feel a sense of empowerment from group sessions. This also allows for you to feel less alone and isolated as everyone in group therapy is going through a similar experience.
There are creative therapies that are a lot of fun as well as relaxing. Many find they have hidden talents or a brand new hobby that they can enjoy. Creative therapies include activities such as =music therapy and art therapy.
There are also wellbeing therapies. Wellbeing therapy covers a wide range of activities, each proven to be just as important as the next. Some are physical activities such as boxing, pilates and gym, some are more relaxed, like yoga or meditation.
There are important nutrition classes available through wellbeing therapy that teach the individual how to stay healthy in future. This helps to prevent future relapse. Wellbeing therapy also helps the individual to maintain and rebuild the strength lost during their addiction.
Aftercare
Leaving rehab can seem terrifying to some. However, that is all made easier with the help of an aftercare team. You will not be left alone to work out living without addiction by yourself. You will be assisted and supported the whole way.
The aftercare team can help with a large variety of things such as accommodation, a new job or finding a local support group for you to attend and keep you on track.
Maybe you found that while you were in art wokrshops that you enjoyed painting, the aftercare team can help you find a painting class local to you for you to attend as having new hobbies are important in recovery.
