Ways Your Environment is Affecting Your Drug and Alcohol Abuse
There are no excuses for drug and alcohol addictions, but there are certain situations – including your environment – which can trigger it. There’s no one reason why people become addicted to drugs and alcohol. But, studies have found that one of the most common factors is family disconnections.
When we’re young, we learn to deal with stress and negative emotions which can sometimes lead us to unhealthy habits. This is why some individuals act out or turn to drugs during their teenage years. Issues such as sexual abuse, divorce and family malfunctions have been links to drug and alcohol abuse.
Another reason is your friendship group. If you associate with people who rely on drugs and alcohol, you’re putting yourself in a dangerous environment where witnessing this behaviour soon becomes the norm.
Whether we realise it or not, our friends influence our behaviour and habits. So, if you’re surrounded by people who consume drugs and alcohol, you’re likely to replicate these habits.
Some drug users learn that drug and alcohol abuse is a part of socialising, and soon becomes a repeated behaviour. For example, if you associate with drinking alcohol to let off some steam, you’re likely to create a pattern where you reach for the bottle whenever you’re feeling low. Studies have found that your setting can have a massive impact on your addiction too.
Overcoming a Drug and Alcohol Addiction
There are many highly beneficial strategies to consider alongside rehab. First, ask yourself when you typically consume drugs and alcohol. Is it in a certain environment? Around specific people? Or when you’re feeling a certain emotion?
You can write a list of occasions you’ve taken drugs and alcohol (particularly during your early addiction) and seek out any patterns.
You may have to change how you think of yourself. Some people continue to live with drug and alcohol addiction because they feel they’re not worthy of a happy life. Do you feel this way about yourself? Maybe you can’t cope with stressful situations and reach for a substance to alleviate the pain.
Perhaps you don’t have enough hobbies and reach for drugs and alcohol for a pass-time. Once you begin to recognise any habits, you can move forward. This can be a painful process because nobody wants to admit that they’re not cut out to deal with something, but addressing a situation will massively improve your recovery.
What to Expect During Our Admission Process?
First, congratulations on seeking professional help for your addiction treatment. You’re likely anxious and clueless on what to expect. But, don’t worry. We’re here to support you every step of the way. When you first enter Ocean Recovery Centre, our admissions team will welcome you to rehab and talk about what to expect.
We understand that everyone has different needs, as well as a different addiction level. That’s why we offer a free pre-admission questionnaire. This isn’t anything daunting, but merely consists of basic questions about your mental and physical health, and drug use. It’s important that you’re honest to aid your recovery, and we’ll never judge your situation.
The full admission process usually only takes around 20 minutes of your time via a telephone call or online communication. But, if you’re more comfortable, we can arrange a home appointment, as some people prefer a face-to-fact encounter.
Once we’re happy that we have enough information about your substance abuse, behaviours and lifestyle, we’ll provide you with a start date to one of our centres. Don’t worry about where you’re based, as we have an array of rehab centres around the U.K. Let’s say you’re located in Leyland, our clinic in Blackpool is only a 30-minute drive away. We also have many other clinics in surrounding areas to help people all around the U.K.
When you arrive at your allocated time, a member of our recovery team will introduce themselves to you. This will be the person you’ll turn to for guidance about your mental health, treatment services and more.
You’ll then meet with a Doctor who will evaluate the current status of your health. It’s important we know the level of care you need so we can review your progress along the way. Then, a friendly co-ordinator will get you comfortable with your new home.

Creating a Treatment Programme Tailored to You
Our trained doctor will perform some medical examinations to analyse your current health condition. As we mentioned early, it’s important we have data to review your progress, but a doctor will also prescribe you with appropriate medication to help with any withdrawal symptoms.
Your co-ordinator will ensure that you receive your prescribed doses at the correct time, as we want to take as much pressure off of you as possible.
It’s also essential that we monitor your behaviour and health when you are first prescribed medication to check how you respond. At this stage, we’ll then discuss treatment options with you. We stress that everyone is unique, so no two people receive the same treatment. Some individuals respond well to support groups, whilst others prefer one-on-one recovery sessions.
After each week, we’ll review your recovery to applaud your achievements and ensure that your chosen plan is working its best for you. At any time during your stay with us, we’ll amend your treatment should we feel doing so is beneficial to you.
If you feel you have a drug and alcohol problem, don’t wait any longer. We want to help you. Call us on 01253 847 553, and we’ll be happy to answer any questions or provide guidance to a life without drugs and alcohol.
